If Vitter had ran just a regular campaign and not run to all of the preachers to help him run on a platform of him being this great "family man" this would be no big deal. This is not my idea of a husband, father or the moral platform he ran on. He should have done like Edwin Edwards and said he loved all women! Black, white, small and big---he just loved women. We would have voted for him and not been disappointed. Women in Louisiana elected Edwin Edwards the first time he ran and we were never disappointed that he was not faithful to his wife. But, when you use your high morals as your platform you need to be able to live up to what you said you were. Also, if you go back to the scandal of Bill Clinton, if I am not mistaken Mrs. Vitter voice her opinion of Hillary staying with him to the media. And Mr. Vitter has been very quick to treaten the politicans that did not support him with an investigation by the FBI. Can he go through such an investigation? SHAME ON VITTER! He has embrassed his family and his supporters. He will never be taken seriously again.

Regarding Vitters behavior, I don't think it will impact his politics at all. Unfortunately, it seems to be the thing for politicians to do. If they aren't homosexuals or perverts of some kind, then they are caught stealing massive amounts of money. Is it any wonder people don't vote. Everyone who gets elected seems to get richer and quickly develop their power base. They can give themselves huge raises and agree on that. I think they all use a common speech @ election time and pass it around to each other.

I am pasting below my blog entry from your website to this message. I would love for my voice to be heard.
I'm not sure why we are always so surprised when something like David Vitter's situation comes out. We rightly hold our goverment to a higher standand than we hold ourselves but we always need to remember that these people are regualar men and women who sometimes fall short in morality and ethics. Should we be dissapointed in David Vitter? Yes. Should this ruin his carreer and plauge his ability to do his job? No. We should never judge a man or woman by their worst mistake. We are all bigger than that one action.
I understand what all of you are saying ... Shame on Vitter! But does this mean that his vision for Louisiana has become less valuable? I didn't vote for him because he was a good husband or father. And for those that did, shame on you. Politics is not ENTIRELY about personal life but about insight into the bigger picture. Can Vitter still deliver the forethought that he promised in the beginning? Absolutely! We must all rally around him and support the business side of his course of action. This does not mean condoning his choices. Leave the judgment of personal matters with his wife and God. Make no mistake, he will be accountable ... But at what cost? Hopefully not at the expense of the greater good of Louisiana.
One more thought ...
The subject of infidelity is an entirely different subject than Health Care, the War in Iraq, or Border control. I don't understand how his shortcomings as a husband play a role in his vision for this state. Furthermore, all the accusations made against him come well before his bid to D.C. Who are we to judge? As far as I can tell, he made peace with his inadequacies long before his campaign to be a Senator. If his wife can forgive, why not us?

Hustler just issued a press release, and they claim their $1 million dollar investigation has yieled credible information to link Vitter to five (5) prostitutes. I guess the snowball just gets bigger as it rolls down the hill Vitter tried to suppress.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New allegations tie Sen. David Vitter to a high-priced brothel in his hometown, one day after he publicly apologized for his connection to an alleged prostitution ring in Washington, D.C.

On Monday, Vitter acknowledged being involved with a D.C. escort service that federal prosecutors say was a prostitution ring. A day later, new revelations linked him to a former madam in New Orleans and old allegations that he frequented a former prostitute resurfaced, further clouding his political future.

Jeanette Maier on Tuesday said Vitter was once a client of the Canal Street brothel. She pleaded guilty to running the operation in 2002. Vitter won his seat in the U.S. Senate in 2004.
Saying he was a "decent guy" who appeared to be in need of company when he visited the brothel, Maier added unexpected details to a scandal enveloping the first-term Republican.

"As far as the girls coming out after seeing David, all they had was nice things to say. It wasn't all about sex. In fact, he just wanted to have somebody listen to him, you know. And I said his wife must not be listening," Maier said in an interview with The Associated Press.
She also was interviewed by several other news organizations. Vitter's office did not respond to calls for comment on the latest allegations.

Federal prosecutors unveiled the existence of the $300-an-hour brothel in April 2002. It was linked to similar operations in other U.S. cities.

"It wasn't all about dirty, raunchy, crazy sex," Maier told the AP. "It was a bunch of guys coming over hanging out with the girls and having a few cocktails, and men being men."
Maier was among 17 defendants who pleaded guilty in the investigation. With all the guilty pleas, there never was a trial, and that kept under wraps a list of customers that reportedly included prominent lawyers, doctors and business professionals.

"He is a decent guy. He's not a freak. He's not using drugs.
He's not using taxpayers money to buy hookers or drugs or anything like that. He's just a decent, normal guy," she said.

Vinny Mosca, Maier's attorney in the brothel case, said in a statement late Tuesday that she never told him about Vitter being a client and that his name never came up in the case.
"Throughout the time that I represented Jeannette Maier in the Canal Street brothel case, the name of David Vitter or any code name for him never came up," Mosca said. "It was not contained in any evidence in the case, including in any book, list or document seized by the federal government or given to the federal government by Ms. Maier."

Mosca also said Vitter's name "was never picked up on any government wiretap nor is it listed in any transcript or court document as part of the Canal Street brothel case."

Also Tuesday, details resurfaced about an allegation that Vitter paid weekly visits to a prostitute in the French Quarter in the late 1990s. The allegations were investigated by a Republican rival when Vitter ran for a House seat in Congress in 1999. The seat had been vacated by Robert Livingston, who resigned after disclosure of marital indiscretions.

Vincent Bruno, a member of the state Republican Party's central committee, said Tuesday that he had confirmed the allegations at the time while working for the campaign of David Treen, a former Louisiana governor running against Vitter.

The allegations never surfaced in the congressional campaign, but The Louisiana Weekly, a New Orleans newspaper, wrote about them in 2002 and 2004. Vitter denied the accusations. The prostitute never spoke publicly about the alleged affair, which was largely ignored by mainstream news organizations.

"She said she was having a paid affair often on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Dauphine and Dumaine," Bruno said, referring to two French Quarter streets.
"It's very sleazy, and it's illegal. But, OK, it doesn't apply to senators. They're an elite group," Bruno said with irony. He has called on Vitter to resign.

Bernie Pinsonat, a Louisiana political analyst, said Republicans most likely would stand behind Vitter despite the new allegations.
"They aren't going to throw him to the wolves," he said, citing support from religious organizations, conservative commentators and the general public.

Vitter declined interview requests throughout the day Tuesday, and made no public appearances in the Capitol. The night before, he'd made a startling confession in an e-mail to The Associated Press about his association with a purported call-girl operation in Washington.
"This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible. Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling."

Vitter's statement said his telephone number was on phone records of Pamela Martin and Associates, an escort service, before he ran for the Senate in 2004. Federal prosecutors have accused Deborah Jeane Palfrey of racketeering by running a prostitution ring that netted more than $2 million over 13 years, beginning in 1993. She contends that her escort service was a legitimate business offering sexual fantasies.

Vitter, 46, and his wife, Wendy, live in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie with their four children. Vitter recently played a prominent role in derailing an immigration bill backed by President Bush. He also is a key supporter of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential bid, serving as regional campaign chairman for the South.

Louisiana College gets 2 million for new degrees

Pineville, LA. …Louisiana College has received a one-time grant for two million dollars from the State of Louisiana to begin a new Allied Health program. The new program will include degrees in the following areas:

Respiratory Therapy
Physical Therapy Assistant
Medical Licensed Technician
Radiologic Technology

Students will be able to obtain an Associates’ or Bachelors’ degree in all of these areas. Individuals, after completing two years of coursework and completing other requirements for an Associate degree will be able to enter the workforce and help fill the critical need for healthcare professionals in central Louisiana and throughout the state.

Healthcare is either the largest or second largest economic driver of the state’s economy. One half of the 30 fastest growing occupations in the entire labor market today are in Allied Health.

This funding initiative given by the State of Louisiana in partnership with the Louisiana Rural Healthcare Association will be administered by the Louisiana Board of Regents.

Louisiana College is filling a great need in the state, especially the rural areas of the state where healthcare professionals are desperately needed. The college will build upon a solid foundation of academic excellence in nursing and pre-med programs. For decades, the college has produced outstanding nurses and candidates for medical school who have gone on to serve their communities. With this one-time grant from the state of Louisiana, Louisiana College will be able to develop a new academic program that will continue to grow and educate students from across the state.

The new Allied Health program will begin this August with the fall semester. Legislators End Fantasy Session
"At the big party following the Legislature's adjournment, lawmakers danced--with their wives mostly--to the rock'n'roll renditions of the Harmon Drew Super Group (led by the appellate judge) in a newly restored historic hotel downtown. Beyond the giant ballroom windows the mighty Mississippi rolled by in the moonlight, as did an endless stream of railroad tankcars transporting propylene and hydrochloric acid. A dreamy Louisiana night.
The previous 60 days had been a dream of sorts for legislators, and just in time for the term-limited many who had waited their careers for a fantasy session like this. Faced with excess billions and the option to spend it or give it back in tax relief, they did both, though much of the latter will be delayed a year or could end up being a mirage.
They also had it both ways on the big ethics issue of financial disclosure for legislators, which nearly everyone voted for but which died when both houses disagreed over how tough to make it. Surely they didn't plan it that way, did they?"

"I am in total shock that in 2007 we still have the bigotry and hate among the races. I come from a family that is mixed with almost every nationality. We have black, white, hispanic and asian. This is really a disgrace to the state of Louisiana and the USA as a whole. We think that we have come so far, and that things have changed, but then some idiot comes along to ruin what we believe.
How in the world were they able to get away with an all white jury and be able to hold the trial in Jena, where ther is already so much racial tension going on? The attorney for Michael Bell, must have been paid off in some kind of way to let this happen to that child.
The boy that they claimed he tried to kill looks pretty darn healthy to me going into the courtroom smiling.
The African American people in Jena should also be ashamed that they do not have enough courage to stand together and make sure that this was fair justice. Why didn't they call in the NAACP from Baton Rouge and other places to stand with them and make sure that they received a fair trial?
Michael Bell must have been a pretty good athlete and was probably in line for a scholorship that someone else in Jena wanted and they decided to get him out of the way.
Also, why wasn't there anything done when the ropes were hung from a tree in the school yard, and this probably wouldn't have gone this far, or why wasn't something done when the so-called victim took a gun to school?
This ia another case of railroad justice and history is doomed to repeat itself again and again until something happens and we realize that people are people, no matter what color their skin is."

This was not a FIGHT-It was a BEATING.
Justin Barker is the victim. It could have been any other white kid. These boys are BAD and they were going to get a white kid that day. Ask around their neighborhoods. Ask their teachers. Ask students at JHS- black or white.
The same handful of people keep showing up for the little rallies. Maybe 15-20 including children. AND the press. The press is trying to make something from nothing. They are inventing a big problem with racism. Are they trying to create violence to get a good story? Please pack up and go home. There is nothing else to report. A crime was committed. The jury returned a verdict. The victim is white and the accused are ALL (6 boys on 1)black. Maybe it is racist-but it looks like the racism is from the black boys-not the white kid. OH-WAIT!

The black community in Jena and surrounding areas did not make a effort to help the six young boys in this case, for example last year when the Valendictorian situation happen at Marksville High, the community stood behind the young lady until the case was settle. "Aside from who we may think is innocent or guilty, I think it is a crime as well as a sad attestation to the justice system in Jena that the the "defense" attorney did not think enough of his client to even attempt to put up a defense. I also feel that the trial was a joke and the defense attorney was an embarrassment to attorneys everywhere and certainly a liability to both the defendant and to everything else that we as Americans consider decent. Shame on you, Mr. "NO DEFENSE" attorney.
Since you could not convince the defendant to accept a "plea bargain", which is the usual way attorneys like youself clear your dockets, it appears you just decided to get rid of your client a different way and mount a NO DEFENSE case. Even child molesters, whom I consider to be the scurge of the earth get better attorneys. Why don't you do all of your future potential clients a favor and crawl back under the rock you crawled out of. "Innocent until proven guilty", I don't think so! Not with this attorney! More like "NO DEFENSE, NOW YOU'RE DEFINITELY GUILTY". Check the numbers:

"What started this whole thing is that Justin Barker allegedly said to his group of freinds that day- "the ignorant niggers are going the wrong way." Barker only intended for his friends to hear this comment but his voice projected. The school nor law enforcement seems to have never properly investigated to validate this claim. If this claim is true, Barker's whipping was well deserved. Justin is made out to be an innocent little angel. He is FAR from it. Yes the boys were wrong for their beating of him. But I believe they were encouraged by Barker's alleged comments. The charges was too harsh for this crime. I do believe the evidence consists of too much he said and she said, and is void of valid facts."

"If the principals of these schools were able to render punishment such as a paddling like they did when we were in school, this incident probably could have been avoided. MANY STUDENTS ARE NO LONGER AFRAID THEY WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES FOR THEIR ACTIONS! Not that many years ago when I was in school if they found you misbehaving they would send you to the principal and you would get your punishment right then and there in the form of an old fashioned tale whipping with a nice thick board otherwise referred to as a paddle. I was afraid to misbehave due to the consequences that would follow. Many students from all walks of life and color are not afraid of authority because they have no authority at home and no one to teach them respect for authority. In the third grade our teachers took us to the parish jail for a tour, we stood against the wall and looked into the cells of many a person whose DISMAL condition instilled fear into each of us. It was forever engrained in my memory growing up and I still haven't forgotten it. Maybe we need to start doing that again. We certainly need to return to the days where students were made to say Yes Mam, No Mam, Yes Sir, No Sir, EXcuse me, I'm sorry, and the teachers and principals be able to say "I WILL CALL YOUR PARENTS IF YOU DO NOT BEHAVE" and the students actually be afraid of their consequences. I knew if I got into trouble at school there would be more trouble when I got home!"

"I'm a former student of Jena High School, and a resident of Jena. I hate that it took all of this to finally recognize that Jena is a RACIST TOWN. I've read all the comments of the locals and they're talking about they're not racist, but I say they are. The worse cases of racism is the people who think they're not prejudice. "The real story here is what the "Jena six gang"'s history really is. Someone needs to interview members of the black community that have been celebrating the arrest of these "kids". They've been terrorized for the last two to three years by this gang. If you could protect their identity you'd get the real story.
I've lived here for nine years and I have yet to see a KKK anywhere but I have gone to the Christmas parades and have always been side-by-side with blacks regardless of where I go. "Frank" needs to actually come to Jena at least once.

"If you are going to cover a story cover the hole story. These six boys who are on trial for the school fight were also in several fights over the previous weekend. One were they even pulled a girl out of a truck and started beating on her. Also the all white jury was all white because the blacks that were called for jury dutty didn't even show up. You may also want to check the time frame on the jury. They were in debate for 2 hours not just 30 minutes."

"My opinion in this case is that these boys did do the crime. The victim clearly could not defend himself and these boys after Barker was knocked out did not have to keep beating him. Noone forced them to do such a thing so in my opion, just as an adult, you do the crime, you do the time or at least be tried for it. Either way it would have gone, each needs to deal with their own trials and get on with it. I have lived in Jena for many years and have never heard of this town being racial. My children have many good friends of both races. I don't see how anyone could even consider letting these boys go and forget this ever happened. Barker could have died, no matter what and there is no worst feeling in the world than losing a child. Believe me, we know this from personal experience. Even if the verdict would have come in "not guilty" Bell was still tried for the crime legally and fully. I hope everyone in this town from now on can get along with each other. Never bef ore this incident have I heard in all my years of living here, anything like this happening and when outsiders come in to state their opinion and say we are the most racial town in the state, I beg to differ as I've lived all over Louisiana and to this day I still say this is a good place to call home."

"Everyone keeps screaming about the prejudism whites show against blacks in Jena. They aren't stopping to think that it goes both ways. If that incident had been reversed and 6 white boys had attacked 1 black boy they would be facing the same charges. It has nothing to do with color, it has to do with the crime that is commited. I believe that there were black people subpoened for petit jury, I think they chose not to show up. If they had shown up,and actually been selected for jury duty then they would not have had anything to whine bout. Its ridiculous any way you look at it. This is going to turn into a riot in the town of Jena at some point, and I have innocent children who could get caught in the crossfire, especially since one of them is starting high school in the fall. This is ridiculous, inflammatory, and just plain stupid. If you are going to commit a crime, maybe you should think about the punishment before you do it. If you know its wrong, WHY DO IT AT A LL. Seventeen-year-old Mychal Bell was found guilty of aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated second-degree battery today. Before the trial, he had faced an attempted murder charge - but the prosecutor reduced that to the charges Bell was convicted of. Bell could be sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.
Last December's attack came amid increasing racial tensions at the school. Earlier, three white students had been suspended from hanging nooses from a tree at the school.
Bell was convicted by an all-white jury. Five other teens also face charges.

"Many years ago two white boys killed a black boy at the fair here in the same sort of incident. They spent many years in prison for their criminal act. A boy in Texas faces the death penalty this very day for killing a young woman in a car jacking there.
The Jena 6 should thank God that someone stopped this senseless act before they killed Justin Barker and faced what these men and the young man in Texas are facing. The laws are the same for black, white, or whatever color you are.

Command Changes at Fort Polk

FORT POLK, La. - Fort Polk will host a Change of Command ceremony for the 83rd Chemical Battalion, 1st Combat Support Brigade (Maneuver Enhancement) at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 21 at 1st CSB Field, here.
During the ceremony, Lt. Col. Eric Brigham will relinquish command to Lt. Col. Scott Estes who recently served on the Army Staff as a Synchronization Staff Officer, and as the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense Branch Chief.
Brigham, who has commanded the brigade since July of 2005, moves to fill the US Army chemical branch manager of the Human Resource Command.
The 83d Chemical Battalion effective nuclear, biological, and chemical reconnaissance, biological surveillance, decontamination, and smoke support to protect the forces assigned to the 18th Airborne Corps. or a Joint Task Force Commander.
The inclement weather location is the Youth Services Gym.
The ceremony is open to the public.

Here is the bio Lt. Col. Scott Estes...

Lt. Col. Scott Estes, a Virginia native, was commissioned into the U.S. Army Chemical Corps as a Lieutenant. After completion of the officer basic course at Ft McClellan, Alabama, he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division (Light) at Schofield Barracks Hawaii, where he served in demanding and varied leadership positions including; squadron chemical officer for the 5th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, as Platoon Leader in the 71st Chemical Company, and the Assistant Division Chemical Officer.

Estes attended the Chemical Officer's Advanced Course and was then assigned to Fort Stewart Georgia. While assigned to Fort Stewart, he served as the 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) Division Artillery Chemical Officer, and Commanded the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 3d Infantry (Mechanized) Division Support Command.

He’s held the NBC Defense Advisor position for the U.S. Navy’s Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island. During his tour in Rhode Island, he earned his Masters degree in Environmental Management from the University of Rhode Island. His next assignment was as the Chemical Officer for the 19th Theater Support Command in the Republic of Korea. Upon his return from Korea, he attended the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Following graduation from CGSC, he was assigned to the 83rd Chemical Battalion where he served as the Battalion S-3 and Executive Officer. During this tour, he deployed with the Battalion in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

Estes’ last assignment was in the Pentagon, where he served on the Army Staff as a Synchronization Staff Officer, and as the CBRN Defense Branch Chief.

Estes awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (3OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (3OLC), the Navy Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal 5(OLC), Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Army Staff Identification Badge.

Estes is married and has two children.

On Lowes in Pineville...

"So we saw no announcement from Lowes. They were too high on their numbers for the project. It seems they were going to pay for some road work in the area, but now they may have to drop that from the package and also scale back on the size of the store itself. Seems
the price for the old Wal-Mart was too much and put them over the normal 18.5 million for a new store. They may even ask the city for some breaks (even though the land isn't in Pineville city limits). It will be a couple of weeks into July before they come back again.
Since they've already locked in with the church and homes for a price, they have to try to cut elsewhere, so we'll see if the city has to make up for some of the difference."

"You may want to talk to the church (Northside Baptist) to see what their plans are after the sale. Lowes is really only buying one occupied home and a house that has been used as a place for various businesses for years (a small brokerage firm, a flower shop, etc.). Of course they are buying the church property as well. The church will be the biggie to concentrate on though."

"I appreciate your new media blog and understand that it is sometimes difficult to get first hand such things as Lowes announcement even though you know about it. I have to admit that it is somewhat misleading to the public to have the media allow the Pineville City Hall bunch to make every announcement regarding every new business . It misleads the public into associating new business with something this Administration does. You do not see the Roy administration announcing new openings. I am sure the private businesses would much rather speak for themselves and not have Fields grandstand on things he knows not of."

"I was visiting some friends last night and found out that they constantly have to deal with power outages the same as we do. I live on the west side of Alexandria and they live near Poland. We both have power through CLECO. We probably have to reset our clocks at least 2 times each week. All we need to have the power go out is for the wind to blow or the lines get wet. I have lived in many places and have never had to deal with so many power outages. We were in Lafayette for Hurricane Andrew and our power never went out. I know CLECO keeps a list of each time the power goes out so you can get an exact number. Information from CLECO to their customers as to why we have such poor service would be appreciated."

And the environment...

"Why is it that in today's environment should everyone but Rapids Parish, be expected to change. Such as change light bulbs, recycle grocery bags, and so on. Rapids Parish burns hundreds of gallons of diesel everyday just to haul garbage around 100 miles one way. Burning fuel, cluttering highways, tearing up highways, emitting greenhouse gases, littering highway, and so on. Just a thought."

SSg. Timothy Cole - A Man to Remember

The story of Staff Sergent Timothy Bruce Cole was first blogged about here.

And since then the painful experience of bringing his body home is what the friends and family members have had to go through.

Today his mother Connie reached out to us and I wanted to take a moment to share her email.

In case you wonder why you have not seen the family interviewed in television it is a commitment of ours only to interview the families of the dead (whether it is from a crime, natural causes or in this case war) if they come to us. Do we get beaten by fellow journalists? All of the time. It is possible to take this approach in a more competitive environment? Probably not, but we put ourselves in the families place and waiting for them to come to us is the right thing to do. It's just that simple.

Here is the email with the author identifying herself as Connie Cole in her own words...

"I'm Timothy's mother. I wanted to let you know that I thought the coverage you did on Timothy was great. Since you were the first to run an article, I thought you would want to be the last. We've been informed that the small town of Elizabeth will be lining the streets today for his ride through town to his last resting place. The town of Oakdale did the same thing when we brought Timothy home on Wednesday. It touched my heart and brought me to tears to see so many people honoring my son for giving the ultimate price for his country, family, and friends. People crowded the boulevards and sidewalks holding flags, candles, pictures of him, and posters welcoming him home. Enlarged pictures of Timothy were posted down the boulevard. The fire department was blowing their sirens. Ten police cars with blue lights were at the head of us along with four motorcycle police ahead of them. People would stop their cars and exit to salute or hold their hands across their hearts when my son passed by. The patriotism shown still brings me to tears. It was wonderful to know that he wasn't forgotten. I and the rest of the family will miss his wit and laughter tremendously. We've received so many cards and notes from people expressing their condolences. Everyone has been so nice and the military has done so much to ensure that his last few days on earth are with honor. They posted two soldiers on either side of his casket since he arrived. They change every 15 minutes. Congressman Rodney Alexander has assisted us and sent someone to our house to express his deepest regrets. He is in Washington this week. I can never say enough to the people of Oakdale and surrounding towns for their support. The town of Forest Hill placed flags along Hwy 165 and the flag flew at half mast at the post office. Today, there are supposed to be four motorcycle clubs escorting Timothy to his services. One is the Leathernecks and the other the Patriot Ride rs. The other two I don't know. The cousin of my daughter-! in-law who is a Marine was flown to Delaware to escort my son home along with a soldier from the Army. A close friend of Timothy's said that if Timothy had to go, he would have wanted to go this way. He would have wanted a 24 karat casket with pearl handles and Mardi Gras beads hanging out. I know if Timothy is looking down, he would be so very pleased by everything that has been done in his honor. People ask what they can do for us, but the fact is that just asking and sharing our grief is more than enough. Again, thanks for your coverage."

"Good Morning Mrs. Cole,I know this day could be the hardest of your life and my heart aces for you and your family. We appreciate you reaching out to us so much. We have assigned Diana Iles and excellent reporter to cover Timothy's funeral today and thank you for this information.I have been emailed by a member of your family looking for copies of the coverage and want to let you know personally I will make dubs for you. This is the least we can do for you and your family. I had planned to attend Timothy's funeral today but may not be able to. Please know I will bow my head and say a prayer for your beloved son and thank him for the incredible sacrifice he has given to keep my children safe from harm. God bless you all."

Lowes to Locate in Kings Country - Anatomy of a Story

The CenlaMedia site is, in part, created to reveal how we approach reporting on stories at KALB-TV. It allows you to see the rationale and then the careful steps taken to be accurate.

A good recent case to examine is the story of Lowes possibly locating in Pineville. This could be one of the worst kept secrets in local real estate history (the Walmart on Hwy 28 West is another example) but it allows us to show you how the decisions are made to report on non-confirmed business news.

Several months ago Joel Massey a reporter with KALB-TV began tracking down a story about Lowes locating in the old Walmart in Pineville handled by Stirling Properties. We called the Pineville city administration and were told they could not confirm nor deny the deal. We approached members of a local church said to be involved in the deal and continued to pursue the people involved from Lowes to the property owner. Everything came up empty. We passed on reporting on the story and then woke up to read a Town Talk article attributed to sources on the development.

KALB-TV does not report from the paper and was unable to independently confirm the story.

Now skip to this week several months later. While reporting on the IP story we obtained an interesting comment from the Mayor of Pineville. He said a big retailer was in town to discuss the development but could not confirm who it was. This time we went with it after being able to independently confirm through two other sources that Lowes was in town talking about details.

The next day we get this email:
"You ran a story last night and also on your website saying that speculation is that there will be an announcement from Lowes this week. You also say that the supposed site would be Kings Country. I can confirm that it is that location, as they have already signed deals to purchase the Northside Baptist Church property, as well as the 5 lots/homes northeast of the church. The store will go in at the old WalMart end of the shopping center."

The email continues with personal information not proper for this forum but it ends with...

"They have known about this since January, so you guys are a little behind the curve."

After a response and an email request for an interview we received the following email...

"I doubt very seriously that they would be willing to go on camera. Their agreement doesn't preclude them from saying they have a deal, but it does preclude them from saying what the deal is. If the "rumor" is King'sCountry, then a little legwork (other than talking to the mayor) would have let you break the news (as there are a lot of church members at Northside that know about it, etc.). It will be big for the area, but unfortunately will hurt a church that has been there for decades as well as households/families who have been there for decades. The biggest thing though is traffic. Military Highway is already turning into a very busy area, especially there in Kingsville. This will only compound the problem. One of your questions for the Mayor should be when is the city going to annex that area (it's currently not annexed) and how are traffic concerns going to be addressed. Those issues are HUGE! Glad to see the area being revitalized after the Wal-Mart move and other closed stores becoming an eyesore in King's Country."

Now we wait for the the news to come "officially" from either Lowes or Northside.

City Council vs. Mayor - Fights Erupt Over Attorney

Tuesday's special council meeting erupted in argments over the CLECO mediation and who can attend closed door sessions.
In the KALB-TV Video Blog we have posted three parts of the confrontations.
In this link - part one the Mayor of Alexandria Jacques Roy and City Attorney Chuck Johnson are engaged in a heated conversation with City Councilman Myron Lawson. At issue is what power the city attorney has and if he has the right to take a legal position for the council without its approval.
In this link - part two central Louisiana attorney Bridgett Brown argues with the Mayor of Alexandria over who should be allowed to decide on her attending a closed door session on the CLECO mediation.
Brown asks a series of questions to the Council President Everett Hobbs and can be seen angry at the process of deciding what rights the city council has over her attending CLECO mediation meetings.
In this link - part three Trey Gist who has worked on behalf of the City Of Alexandra's interest for over 25 years explains why Ms. Brown should not be allowed to sit in on a closed door session over the CLECO mediation.
Mr. Gist says "she can't sue the city and enroll as a lawyer (for the city) at the same time"
You may recall the council was to meet in executive session to hear an update on the CLECO mediation. The meeting ended and the council met with the mayor in open session to hash out the issue of what lawyers can or can not be present for the executive session. Most of the arguments stem from the idea that councilman feel they are not being told the details about the CLECO mediation and some want to allow attorney Bridgett Brown to attend closed door meetings.

ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Credited for its support of women- and minority-owned businesses, the England Economic and Industrial Development District has been awarded the 2007 Federal Aviation Administration Disadvantaged Business Enterprise award.

England officials say the prestigious award, which will be presented Wednesday in Las Vegas, recognizes only one airport in the United States for success in promoting women- and
minority-owned businesses.

Jon Grafton, the Airpark executive director, said he was pleased about the award, which comes at a time when several programs and construction projects continue to shape the three-housand-acre community known as England Airpark.
England Airpark grew out of the shuttered England Air Force Base, which closed in the 1990s and left many buildings little used but with great potential.

The Airpark has a hotel, a restaurant, an 18-hole golf course, a day care facility, apartments and about 50 industrial tenants, many of which are minority-owned enterprises.

Local Soldier Killed in Iraq

The call came into the News Channel 5 studios today at about 2:00pm. It was a family member of Sgt. Timothy Bruce Cole. They wanted to know why we had not reported on the death of Cole who was 28 and from Oakdale. We explained the Department of Defense, in our experience, runs about three days behind the date of death because there are important policies regarding notification of next of kin for a fallen soldier.

The call was agonizing to take because the pain of the loss was so raw.

John-Thomas Kobos visited Oakdale today and has this report. We're told Timothy Bruce Cole was a career soldier. He graduated from Oakdale High School and went into the Marines. He loved being a solider and transferred to the 82nd Airborne Army. He was scheduled to return from Iraq in August but his service there was extended to November. He was to transfer from Ft. Bragg to Ft. Polk then.

We will continue to follow this important story and offer this link to the latest data on soldiers killed in Iraq.

Hines vs. Kennedy - Kennedy wins one?

The Baton Rouge Advocate is reporting Senator Hines has dropped his quest, SB 14, to remove State Treasurer John Kennedy from the State Bond Commission.

You may recall Kennedy when in Alexandria recently talked about the issue with us in the KALB-TV Video Blog. Saying Hines was angry with him over the failed Bunkie Sugar Mill deal. This issue has been a favorite of Chad Rogers of The Dead Pelican. And the Video Blog we did with Kennedy has had plenty of hits with people looking for his side of the issue.

What is interesting in the Advocate article is the partial quote attributed to Senator Hines
"Hines said he was taking the step in response to senators’ reluctance to embrace the idea because of “news media and conservative talk radio” questioning “of the motivation of this bill.”Hines said the executive committee that he proposed is needed because of “the arrogant and arbitrary manner,” in which Kennedy decides what the bond commission should hear.
Kennedy’s approach is “not in the best interest of the people of this state,” he said."

To Blog or not to Blog - that is the question

Several of you have emailed recently asking what is going on with this blog and the comment section. Comments are now allowed only from "team members" which signaled to some of you the listening had stopped.

Not true.

The cenlamedia blog will continue to be used as another way for us to make contact with the blogosphere, but it will move into the kalb.com fold soon.
As some of you know, on kalb.com we have a Video Blog section which has been a destination for newsmakers in our state. The video blog and cenlamedia are a part of a project by Media General to reach out to web users and find ways to communicate.

It has at times been a slugfest but for the most part very helpful in engaging a group of people who are unhappy with the staus quo in the central Louisiana media.
There is however, one new requirement. You must be willing to have a verifiable email to become a part of the discussion. We do not have to know who you are, just that you are willing to at least identify a part of your existence online.

That way we can begin to form a community advisory group online that has a say in what is local news. Keep it clean, focused and away from silly personal attacks and online you go.
Kalb.com now ranks among one of the top 25 website in the Media General system for unique visitors and you can become a part of that online community if you are willing to adhere to some basic rules.

APD Weed and Seed and Community Policing

Alexandria Police Chief Daren Coutee is on record trying to revive the community policing idea in the city of Alexandria.

From Wikipedia we learn this about community policing..."Community policing is a political philosophy in which the police and police department are seen as members of the community, with police officers being part of where they live and work. Cities and counties that subscribe to this philosophy tend to do much more community work than traditional police departments. This often includes having more police officers who "walk the beat" as opposed to driving around in police cars. The basic idea is to create bonds of trust and reliance between police and the public."

Zone 4 commonly known as the Sonja Quarters has been the home of a program Coutee calls "Weed and Seed". Mid January KALB-TV Reporter Joel Massey spoke with Pastor Floyd Kirts about the Weed and Seed program in his community. He said the crime situation was getting better and he told Joel it had improved was because of the increase in police presence.

Coutee said in January "we weed out the bad, re-institute order in the community and then the seed portion is done by the residents to refurbish, rebuild and re-institute pride … It does work. If the people in the area want to become involved."

Kirts gave his take as well by saying it took more than just the police "Pastors, preachers, grandparents, mothers, it's everybody. The old cliche says it takes a village to raise a child. So I'm hoping that everybody in this area will come together and say let's do it together."

Six months later the Chief is still taking steps to add police to his staff and is points toward community policing as a way to combat crime.

Hurricane season is off with a tropical depression and plenty of warning about being ready for another big one to hit the coast this year.

Local emergency management agencies tell us they are ready. Plans are being developed for a new evacuation center in Cenla and a quick visit to the local Walmart we made shows people stocking up.

Cnn.com has this item about New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. Sources say he is considering a bid for governor. He says he is often asked when visiting with residents if he will run.

Say what you wish, Nagin running would certainly gain national attention and make the run for governor of our state interesting.

The Louisiana Libertarian State Party is holding its 2006-2007 State Convention in Alexandria this weekend.

What is a Libertarian? Here is one definition from Wikipedia.
"Libertarianism is a political philosophy maintaining that all persons are the absolute owners of their own lives, and should be free to do whatever they wish with their persons or property, provided they allow others the same liberty and avoid abusing their liberty."

According to a press release, Saturday is the big day with the morning guest speaker being Joe Vaughn of the Louisiana Department of Revenue. Also speaking, Kevin Lavine a retired state trooper who will deliver a presentation on the prohibition of drugs and answer questions.

After lunch the Libertarian Presidential Candidates George Phillies and Daniel Imperato will deliver speeches and then answer questions from the audience.

If you are interested, all events are being held at the Holiday Inn Express in Alexandria this weekend.

We came across this article in nola.com of a recent visit with former Governor Edwin Edwards.

Jim Gill of the Times Picayune begins his piece...
"OAKDALE -- Laughter and animated conversation fill the air, especially at our table on the verandah this sunny May morning, but the mood, if not slightly forced, cannot be typical of this place.
It is visiting day at the federal prison camp in Oakdale, where I have come to see former Gov. Edwin Edwards, whose continued confinement should offend any sense of justice or decency."

It reminds us that we have requested a visit with the former Governor as well and wonder why he is not interested in talking with us. We are, after all, one of the news organizations he grew up with. If Edwards watches local news we are one of his choices.

The New Orleans Levee - FREE Satire in the City

A friend gave us a copy of a newspaper produced in New Orleans described as "free satire in the city."
It is called The New Orleans Levee and the newspaper is filled with snappy repartee. This is the kind of stuff that has you laughing out loud and grabbing the phone to call someone and read it out loud.
The issue given to me is Volume 1, Issue 6. The headline blaring "City Hall now officially a joke"
Yes, it is sad. Yes, the news is at times raunchy and disrespectful (warning - this stuff is for adults) but it is funny, and some might say during these tough times it is important to keep your sense of humor.

It turns out this was actually a post in the Cenla Antics blog. The item was of interest to us simply because of the lack of information surrounding the CLECO and City of Alexandria litigation.
The statement in the emailed comment above is not factual. Here are the facts and why this is not a news story.
CLECO Executives, like any other high level employee of a publicly traded company have a small window of opportunity to sell their earned options/shares. This is regulated by the SEC and there are public filings required. A quick visit to the CLECO website at this link, SEC filings shows all of the executives and what stock they have sold in May and for how much.

Buddy Caldwell wants to be your Attorney General

Buddy Caldwell has spent 29 years of service as a District Attorney and visited the KALB-TV studios recently for a Video Blog. Mr. Caldwell is emphasizing his long public service as an attorney for the people of Louisiana. We talked with him about why he would go after a job which some say pays too low for the position. His answer is that this is not the kind of election a person goes after to get rich.

He was elected to the office of District Attorney for the parishes of East Carroll, Madison, and Tensas in September of 1978, and has been reelected to that office ever since. On his website it says "Buddy has already been assigned and personally handled more Attorney General cases for the state than all living Attorneys General combined, despite the fact that he is not yet Attorney General."

Today, John-Thomas attends another soldier memorial for Sergeant Jason Alan Schumann, 23, of Hawley, Minnesota. He died Saturday,May 19, near Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq. Schumann died of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Schumann was a Cavalry Scout assigned to Apache Troop, 3rd Squadron,89th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Infantry Division.

Schumann joined the Army in Sept. 2001 and arrived at Fort Polk in Oct. 2004.

He may not have been from central Louisiana, but he lived with us since 2004. Is it too much to ask for everyone today to bow your head and say a silent prayer for these soldiers?

The Race for High Sheriff - Cenla Style

Today in the Paragon Casino candidates for the Avoyelles Parish sheriffs race gather for a debate. Longtime Sheriff Bill Belt is not running for reelection and we're told this race could be one to watch. What are the major issues facing the area and how can a new sheriff help improve law enforcement? If you have insight your comments are welcome. We will be on our toes for any election irregularities...

And speaking of election irregularities and sheriffs races, the Rapides Parish race is like a bomb waiting to go off with someone (unnamed) lighting a big fuse earlier this week.

KALB-TV news was contacted with a tip there are activities going on within the sheriffs office that are against the law(whose law we haven't figured out). We take calls like this frequently during election season and unless there is a credible and verifiable complaint that has been filed with the Elections Commission we take a pass. The majority of the complaints right now center around election signs but there are more serious issues being brought to us.

In response KALB-TV ran an item explaining where to go if there are election complaints. Nothing on the radar worth sharing yet unless we missed something, did we?

Kennedy Video Blog "Sen. Hines mad at me"

In the interview Kennedy answers a question from a blogger about the State Bond Commission issue and says the item is authored by Senator Don Hines because he is mad at Kennedy over the Bunkie Sugar Mill issue.

He outlines what he would do if he were "King for a Day" and no it is not replace Hines, but a three point plan for the state's load of cash.

He has been pounding his fists and giving a message to the people about fiscal responsibility since being told in essence he can not do his job the "Recovery Authority" will. Remember them? They administer the Road Home program.

City of Alexandria sued over utility rates.

This is the item we ran tonight on KALB-TV.
The City of Alexandria is being sued in a class action lawsuit filed by Shreveport attorney Larry English.
The suit claims the city has over charged its rate payers for utility costs.

The lawsuit claims “...the City has over charged plaintiffs and class members on their utility accounts for a period of time dating from 1997 to the present.”

One note, English you may recall is the attorney for Bridgette Brown. Brown a local attorney was removed from the Cleco lawsuit by city administration.

The Cleco case is in mediation and last word has not publicly taken any steps forward.

We'll have more on this story as it develops and have been in contact with the Mayor's office for a response but have not heard back yet.

Do bigger public salaries equal better government officials?

I read with great interest the lapolitics newsletter today and thought of sharing an excerpt.

John Maginnis writes the following...
Increasing the salaries of politicians, especially those at the top, is always a tough sell, and the availability of resources seldom has anything to do with it.
With every election cycle one hears the lament about the lack of good people willing to offer themselves for public office. Yet what are we doing to make public service more attractive? Small wonder that fewer successful, well-adjusted individuals choose to endure the expense, stress, heartache and plain meanness of modern-day election campaigns for the honor and rewards of serving we the people.

Last year, Attorney General Charles Foti, a retired sheriff, stirred up huge controversy and anger within the medical community and the public for arresting a doctor and two nurses following his post-Katrina investigation of mercy killing at a New Orleans hospital. It was assumed that he would face multiple viable challengers this year from the ranks of district attorneys and term-limited legislators. So far, the only takers are Buddy Caldwell, a district attorney eligible to retire, and Royal Alexander, a former congressional aide.
Foti sits on a big campaign war chest, but is he that strong or is the lure of the state's top legal office so weak? Where are the state's best legal minds or even politically ambitious lawyers, who could position themselves to run for governor or senator? They are making money, of course, having invested heavily in building their professional careers.
Even doubling the A.G.'s salary would not come near what top lawyers in private practice are pulling down, but doing so would make a one-term or two-term stint feasible, especially for some well-qualified district attorneys.

And finally...

On this subject a few years ago, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu said, "You get what you pay for," and instantly regretted it. What he meant was not that he and other incumbents would work harder if paid more, but that more good people would offer themselves for the top levels of public service if they didn't feel they would be punished for it.

Gas prices up - use the internet to find local cheap gas?

Here is the latest AP wire copy on the Lundberg Survey...

Gas prices up eleven cents nationwide
The Lundberg Survey says the average price of self-serve regular gasoline has hit a record high of three dollars, 18 cents per gallon.
That's up more than eleven cents over the previous two weeks. The previous record adjusted for inflation was three dollars, 15 cents per gallon in March 1981.
A gallon of mid-grade gasoline averaged three-29, and premium cost three-40, according to the latest Lundberg Survey of seven-thousand gas stations across the country.
Nationwide, the lowest price for regular fuel was two-87 in Charleston, South Carolina, and the highest was in Chicago at three-59 a gallon.

Central Louisiana prices are climbing and this brings up our Pain at the Pump program. The idea is to find as many people as possible that can form a network and find the least expensive gas prices. It may be just a few cents difference per gallon, but at these prices anything can help. Just post your comments and we'll see if the power of the Internet can help people save a little money.

Chris Roy, Jr. to run for House District 25 Seat

It has been widely speculated that someone would jump into the race for District 25 other than the current list of former Alexandria Police Chief Glen Beard, a democrat and Lance Maxwell, a republican.

Thursday Chris Roy, Jr., a democrat, made it official and announced via email his candidacy for the seat being vacated by Charlie Dewitt a one time Speaker of the House, and term limited legislator.

Undoubtedly much will be made of Mr. Roy running while his brother holds the office of Mayor of Alexandria. The Roy family is making their mark on central Louisiana politics with this announcement.

Roy, Jr. says that as a member of the House of Representatives he will focus on improving education and fully funding our schools, creating better job opportunities and making healthcare more accessible and affordable.

Royal Alexander on run for Attorney General

Royal Alexander you may recall was the Chief of Staff for Congressman Rodney Alexander (no relation) and did a "soft" announcement of his run for AG.
We blogged about Mr. Alexander here Friday, March 30th and again here when an item appeared in The Times Picayune.

It is now official and Mr. Alexander is running on this promise "I am running to end the 'good old boy' politics of the past and to provide new and effective leadership to the Attorney General's office."

Farrar draws opposition in race for House Dist. 27

This morning a political newcomer jumps in the race for House District 27. Rep. Rick Farrar who is one of the few central Louisiana legislators not term limited right now hold the seat.
Farrar can serve one more term. Hazel tells us he is a 42-year-old assistant district attorney for Rapides parish and that he will announce his candidacy on the courthouse steps. The former marine calls himself a republican. His resume says at one time he worked as a border patrol agent.

Newschannel 5 anchor/reporter Al Quartemont did some research, and says it's ironic to note as assistant DA, Hazel will directly benefit from a bill sponsored by Farrar that increases the pay for that position to 45-thousand dollars.

The bill passed the house Tuesday and moves on the senate for debate.

Hotel Bentley sale falls through.

The prospective purchaser of the Hotel Bentley, Cyntreniks Hospitality Company LLC, has released a letter sent to the City of Alexandria Monday saying the deal is dead.

John Schneider, President of Cyntreniks says in the last paragraph of his letter
"Our inspections, construction budgets, sales and marketing plans, and financial proformas clearly evidence that successfully restoring and operating the Hotel Bentley to its original grandeur is feasible with proper funding. We know from the public sentiment that it is desirable to bring back the Bentley. We still stand ready to be a part of that partnership; however, without prompt action in that direction, our effort must not only be suspended, but permanently halted."

Also in an attachment made to the letter Schneider points to his project in Oaklahoma City as a vision of what he is looking for...
"In 2000, with the hotel decaying, local, Oklahoma City historic preservationists urged city officials to look at similar landmark hotels across the country as inspiration for an effort to bring back the hotel to economic commerce. A Skirvin Solutions Committee was appointed. After field trips to several redeveloped downtown hotels nationwide, the committee concluded in a written report that renovation of the Skirvin would not be possible without a private/public partnership and visionary leadership. It also concluded that downtown Oklahoma City would never reach its potential unless the Skirvin was restored to economic commerce. The Committee also asked the city to find the monies in public help to make it viable for a developer to restore the property. The report concluded that a reopened Skirvin would include 250 permanent jobs and improved competitiveness for conventions."

Go Aces...time to play ball!

The Aces begin play at 7:05 tonight taking on the Laredo Broncos in historic Bringhurst Park. This is one of those activities just about everyone can enjoy even if you are not much of a baseball fan. It is just plain good old family fun.

Those of us there that night will remember the return of Aces baseball in 1994 and can recall a packed house full of one of the most diverse groups of people in central Louisiana. The air was electric that night and it was more of a social event than a baseball opening night.

Jump to tonight with two Texas-Louisiana League titles (won back-to-back in 1997-98) and one Central Baseball League title (won 2006) under its belt and a core group of local baseball fans.

This evening may not have the same feel as that night in 1994 and there may be too much going on our area to fill the park, but with the opening pitch a tradition continues many in our area feel strong ties to.

The timing is interesting with much discussion over the issue of hospital expansion and city green spaces in the area around Bringhurst Park. That question remains open but one that does not is what people in the stands will be cheering... Go Aces!

Cabrini to take over ball parks?

Apparently a letter was recently sent to 190 families in the area around St. Francis Cabrini Hospital about a public meeting being held to discuss possible expansion into area parks or Smart Growth as the Roy administration terms it.

We have not received a copy of the letter sent to the residents nor an official notification of when this public meeting will be held. An anonymous online post says this about when it will happen...

Kelvin Sanders - Former City Attorney to Announce.

Word has it Mr. Kelvin Sanders will announce Friday evening he is running for office. Sanders you will recall is the former attorney for The City of Alexandria. Mr. Sanders has a lengthy resume which undoubtedly he will highlight as he focuses on his qualifications to lead.

During a particularly testy time in city government last year, Sanders became the focus of an issue between then Mayor Ned Randolph and his Chief of Staff Delores Brewer. Just reading some of the links here by Googling "Kelvin Sanders of Louisiana" brings back a list of issues where Mr. Sanders was a central figure.

But now it is May 2007 and the people who will vote in the race Mr. Sanders is jumping into know him for more than what is in his Google search and that connection could send him into office.

KALB-TV has on many occasions attempted to contact Mr. Sanders for comments on one issue or another. Rarely did he agree to an on camera interview. Perhaps he is shy.

Mr. Sanders, you might want to get over that if you are jumping in the ring. It's been known to be a circus.

Louisiana State Legislature wants ethics? Humm.

Ethics - schmethics! Just about everyone who watches the state legislature is calling for stronger ethics reform (Metzgar, Moon) and now you have this article in The Advocate, and this in Nola.com revealing ethics reform is not being received by the legislators as well as hoped.

Here is one of the last paragraphs:

"The panel approved a proposal to require that lobbyists specifically report the issues they attempt to advance, rather than simply their clients. But the bill exempts those who lobby only the executive branch, and an amendment removed the requirement that lobbyists file their activity and expenditure reports electronically, meaning there will be no easily searchable public database for the information.
Two other financial disclosure bills were among a handful of measures that had not been heard when the committee adjourned its nearly five-hour session minutes before the full House was to convene."

Those who work on-line are sounding the drum beat and saying it is in this issue the Internet community can get involved.

Ethics and transparency should be present in all public service but there must be substance behind the "buzz" words and that is what ethic reform is all about in the legislature. Now the question is - how far will the proposals go? Just how much will they be watered down? And do our on-line contributors have enough visitors who will contact their legislators and let them know they are watching?

The Dead Pelican and Chad Rogers.

Since you are reading this online we can assume you know about The Dead Pelican a "Drudge for Louisiana" type of website. Chad Rogers the creator, editor and webmaster of the site visited Alexandria Tuesday and talked with us on the KALB Video Blog about his online venture and how it all began.

When you first meet Rogers you learn he truly is the brains behind the site and is someone who has his computer attached at the hip. The success of the site is clearly that it is updated frequently and pulls all Louisiana information from all over the state. Rogers tells us he is aware of the bias the site reflects but is not concerned about that. His main goal and objective, he says, is to get people thinking. With Louisiana at the bottom of the good lists and the top of the bad lists Rogers is one person in this state looking to question everything.

After meeting him in person it is clear he is an intelligent editor with more on his mind than trying to influence people to vote a certain way. He is a new breed of cyber-journalists not afraid of saying he has no clear idea what the effect of his site will be on the political process, only that if it gets people thinking that is a good thing.

In case you have not read some of the comments in this thread below this post I have included some samples.

Now here's the anatomy of how one of your local broadcast news organizations is trying to balance the reporting on this issue.

The KALB-TV newsroom meets every morning at 9:30 am and again in the afternoon at 2:30 pm. Monday morning we discussed the issue of communication between the mayor and city council. To his credit the reporter assigned to following city developments wanted to follow up on the story. I was not in support of taking resources out of reporting on a suspicious death and pressed for Joel Massey to look further into this story. Another reporter was assigned to this issue that effects the driving safety of a large number of commuters in the city.

Was our decision a mistake? Perhaps. Have we denied the viewers of KALB-TV a look at some of the acusations flying around in this article?

Today, in spite of my assertion we should move on to the details actually present in the agenda, the real question is, are the city council members meeting in a quarum and deciding on issues effecting city residents illegaly? We will be in today's meeting watching and listening.

"I just think it is childish for the members of the city council to not reply or at least listen to questions/comments/discussion/reasoning/plans of the Administration. We wonder why nothing is being done, well this is probably part of the problem...ahem City Council."

"The City Council is made up of very intelligent and experienced men and they would never decide to not communicate with the Mayor without there being some type of issue at hand, and it is absolutely asinine to believe otherwise. It would seem residents of central Louisiana are watching Alexandria City Council meetings in record numbers and in some cases physically joining by attending the meetings in person.

The letter sent to the media in our previous post outlines how Mayor Roy would like to handle security concerns and even gives a hint to some of the lack of communication between the mayor and council members.

But if you read the agenda for the Tuesday, May 8th meeting objectively it is difficult to see the "smoking gun" of a confrontational item.

Here are some items of interest:

Questions and Answers

Why did council members say they were taken by surprise? And, why would they be concerned about increasing security?

As far as the council being surprised, the security issue is nothing new, and they, indeed, had verbally stated their concerns. If you look at their offices, they are completely locked down from the front entrance of the department to the door connected to the council chambers. Only those with the code are able to access the rooms behind the actual city council chambers. The suggestion for a security plan, made by Chuck Johnson, who serves both the Administration and the City Council, was to ensure that everyone in the council chambers would be provided with the same level of security currently provided to the council alone except in open session.

The issue here is not about security. The Administration does not engage in surprise tactics, although it constantly deals with such action by the city council which uniformly seeks to broaden its role from legislating to day-to-day operations.

In city government, there are two branches – the City Council, led by the City Council President, and the Administration, led by the Mayor. The City Council’s role is to authorize ordinances that govern the city, and the Administration’s role is to enforce that legislation and manage the City’s operations and planning. One of those operational requirements is to do everything to protect the residents of our city, particularly when they use our public facilities.

Why is the Administration interested in increasing security?

I have no apologies for being concerned about security in this day and age. It’s easy to criticize the attention being paid to creating a security plan until something actually happens. Then the question would be “why was more not done”? The city’s administration takes its responsibility for public safety seriously and that includes everyone who attends council meetings including the councilmen, the administration and especially the residents who are in attendance.

Has there been a specific event that triggered the proposal?

To be specific, members of the administration have had real threats. In addition, we’ve had people walk into council meetings with duffel bags and other paraphernalia that seem unrelated to the reason for being at the meeting, and yes, that does raise the level of concern. But, most importantly, it is clear that an appropriate response to a threat cannot occur under the current model.

I would like to note that many of the governmental buildings in the same vicinity have strict security measures including the Rapides Parish Courthouse, Alexandria City Court, U.S. District Court and the Louisiana State Office Building.

Could the council have initiated measures to increase security?

Absolutely. Because the City Council’s chamber space is under its control, we had initially hoped that the council members would initiate additional security procedures. When nothing was forthcoming, the city attorney, who acts on the behalf of both branches of government, sent down a letter outlining his recommendations to create a more secure meeting place and simply follow existing law, which as I mentioned before, is the Administration’s job.

In the letter, it was mentioned that a Fire Department officer would be on hand to enforce capacity regulations? Why is that important?

As far as enforcing the fire code regarding legal capacity, I want to say that we’re pleased that the residents have taken an interest in city government by attending our council meetings, but overcrowding any space beyond its limits is unsafe. The capacity for the room is set through a national code and is designed to make sure that people can get out of the building quickly and efficiently in case of a fire. Again, this is the Administration enforcing a regulation that is already in place.

What about council members saying there is a lack of communication?

In reference to the comments regarding the lack of communication, I personally make concerted efforts to be available at any time day or night to speak to council members and have instructed the rest of my staff to be as accessible. Since I took office in December, I have made repeated attempts to contact Mr. Everett Hobbs by phone. He has neither answered nor returned numerous phone calls since that time. Because it is vital that the City Council President and the Mayor of any city are able to share and discuss information, I have resorted to the written word in order to assure consistent communication to Mr. Hobbs and the entire council. This is not my first choice in that it extends the time it takes to get things done, but I have been left with no other options.

Alcohol sales and "dry" vs. "wet" districts in Cenla.

It seems everyday there is a new announcement from a business in central Louisiana requesting a liquor license in a "dry" area.

These business owners, if they speak on the record at all, are saying they want the opportunity to grow their business. The requests are coming through the Rapides Parish Police Jury and are being rejected because the Police Jury President Butch Lindsey says the will of the people is for the area to remain alcohol free.

Some are blaming the City of Pineville for this upsurge in liquor license requests even if they are not located within the city limits.

Others are saying this whole surge in requests was bound to happen as business owners see what businesses selling alcohol are raking in with liquor sales.

KALB-TV reporter Joel Massey travelled to Deridder, Louisiana this week and has an interesting story you can watch here if you missed it. The mayor says the bottom line there is, liquor sales have increased business and added to the communities coffers putting Deridder on an even playing field with cities around it. Two new businesses have opened and there are plans for a hotel and more restaurants. Projected revenue 2007 is 4 million with about 350,000 tax revenue expected. Certainly the religious leaders would argue this is not what the area needs and point to homes broken, children abused and a general negative influence in the area.

Back in central Louisiana, next week Julie Wilkerson a local attorney representing Fuel Plus will go before a court and argue the time has come for liquor sales.

Jena Six...what is the truth here?

Wednesday night in Jena a gathering of about 50 people met to protest the treatment of six young men who are charged with various crimes centered around a fight with another high school student. The "Jena Six" as they are now being called are black - the student white. But that is not the only part of the story.

Where this strife begins within the high school is unclear, it really depends on who you talk to. How the anger became so overwhelming that it would erupt in charges of hate crimes (the famous noose in the school yard tree) and attempted murder charges for some is a tough story to reach.

KALB-TV has visited Jena countless times to try and present the facts around what is happening in the community. There have been interviews with high school teachers, students, parents involved, plus community and school leaders. But the story has garnered international attention (the BBC was in town for weeks) and could end up the focus of an Al Sharpton march in downtown Jena.

How does it all get this far? Who is working on a solution? If you have any insight into this situation your local media needs you. This is a story that on the surface would seem easy to report on. Stick the microphone in an angry persons face and use it on TV. But does that approach harm the communities ability to heal?

How many times have you seen the issue of comment moderation on this new blog? Obviously not enough. After a KALB.com video blog conversation with Louisiana blogger Emily Metzgar it is clear the time has come to back off and be careful.

The interview was helpful for an online neophyte and instructive when it comes to the idea that anyone can say anything anonymously.

Although the world has been blogging for longer than many of us in central Louisiana, it is clear the time has come to tread carefully and not forget what the goal is, intelligent conversation.

That means ask questions, but expect it to take some time before they are posted. Be aware this is still a work in progress, and more than ever use this vehicle to generate good community story ideas, no matter how simple they may seem.

Will the Louisiana blogosphere matter this political season?

Those of you who have visited this blog since the beginning know there is much discussion about the issue of the blogosphere in general. Being somewhat new to this business of anonymously writing feelings online for anyone who has the desire to click to read, I continue to ask, what effect will this all have in the long run?

Will Mayor Jacques Roy change his vision based on the Internet response to his actions?
Will Mayor Fields finally shake the online charges he and his staff are really snakes in the grass?
Will central Louisiana bloggers light into the race of Rapides Parish Sheriff?

And the big one, how will the information being thrown from one side or the other effect the race for Louisiana governor?

Today, if all goes as planned, I will interview Emily Metzgar who I have spoken of before in this blog. As we enter into a time where legislators are being held to task online more than ever and you have a web savvy candidates for Governor, do you have any questions for her?

Arts Council Director Fired or Resigned, anatomy of the story.

Friday I received a tip the Arts Council Director Dana DeMartino, who had resigned that day, was possibly not leaving on her own accord. The story was Ms. Martino had fired or forced out of the organization several key and long time employees and that she had serious performance issues.

After that call Saturday morning I posted the following headline on this blog, and promoted the story on a local blog in an effort to see what information about Ms. Demartino was available. The idea was to use the information gathered to formulate questions of the decision makers in the situation and find the truth. As expected Cenla Antics where I promoted this blog was not helpful and even a tad insulting. Not a surprise in this new world.

In the meantime an internal memo was leaked to me regarding Ms. DeMartino's job issues. This information was not released as it held several items in it difficult to verify. The story it seems was difficult to verify on many levels.

Monday, I assigned KALB-TV Anchor/Reporter Renee Allen to the story. Ironically we were in the process of receiving training from the Society of Professional Journalists and Renee had difficulty getting calls back from all parties involved in the issue.

To her credit Ms. DeMartino stepped up to the plate and granted KALB-TV an interview that you can watch here. The Arts Council board president also gave Renee a statement to the effect that Ms. DeMartino was simply leaving for a better opportunity and that she had done a terrific job.

I know for a fact Renee Allen emailed or called at least four people who's names where given to us to verify the claims of job performance issues with Ms. DeMartino. As of this writing I am unaware of any calls back.

It's a new day, and Legislative Session.

Sure a Legislative Session is dry news and uninteresting. Some will say it's not as much fun to follow as a tug-of-war between Mayor and Council or following up on an any number of "rank rumors" but it is our future, and we have no choice but to stand at attention.

Louisiana blogger/podcaster Emily Metzger gives this warning...
"So, just a heads-up before you convene on Monday: The time for goat shows, lawnmower races, sweetheart deals for beloved family members, unnoticed vote changes, term-limit evasion, and lip service to vagaries like “reform” is over."

And Louisiana State University Shreveport political science professor Jeff Sadow has the good the bad and the ugly of pre-filed legislation, which I might add, includes several pieces from our own central Louisiana crew.

So what say you? What legislation are you following and do you have any suggestions for your local media on how to cover this "dry" yet essential piece of state news? We're listening.

Sources say things are not as they seem in the Dana DeMartino resignation. You may recall DeMartino was named Director of the Arts Council in the summer of last year. From the beginning, the director drew some odd reactions. DeMartino drew negative feedback several months ago when she appeared on KALB-TV’s Noon news and insulted the community by saying central Louisiana residents fill venues for monster truck shows but do not support the local arts. Whether that is true or not, it surely is not the way to encourage residents to take part in arts events. I remember sending emails back to the viewers thanking them for their concern and simply stating this was Ms. DeMartino’s opinion, not KALB-TV’s.

Now as the news of her resignation hits central Louisiana residents it is revealed DeMartino was difficult to work for and that five employees with the Arts Council have left since she came on board. Apparently, DeMartino was to be evaluated soon. Could this be the reason she is hitting the road? Have you had contact with the Director? We’re listening.

The headline of this online article caught my eye because it had two important components, the stock market high and Warren Buffet's name. Certainly it is possible after a week like we have had on the stock exchange some of you are invested and wondering what this means to your future. Others may wonder what possible effect this could have on their lives.

Let me just make this point, Mr. Buffet sometimes takes the simplest ideas, in this instance investing in the railroad, and turns it to gold. Clearly the guy has a handle on something and that makes me wonder, how does the "little" guy get ahead and learn from what others do? Do you gather what little cash you have and gamble on the stock market using information from big guys like Buffet?

Or let's take this a step further and relate the idea to the City of Alexandria City utility rates, can we the "little" guy find out what small municipalities like ours are doing and find a better deal? Certainly some of those small cities are doing it better since the owner of our local MacDonalds chain is paying more than most in a multi-state area. But you have to ask, do the people responsible for the utility rates within the city administration have the freedom to take stock and find a better way? Some of you have very strong opinions. Can you share information with all of us on how this issue could be resolved?

Maybe we just need a local Warren Buffet.

In my last post titled 2 Assistants dumped, everyone happy an anonymous commenter says the following:
"We can't expect two or three people to do the work of ten people, and I applaud Roy for recognizing Alexandria is a mega-million dollar corporation in need of a strong and intelligent staff, each responsible with their own duties. I'm also glad he broke down Lamar White's and Jaqueline Whitle's jobs, because I wondered why one was a publicist and one was a public relations person. It now sounds to me both have a bunch of different responsibilities."

I agree, that further defining what the special positions created on the mayors staff are and who will hold them is important, if only to continue the transparency promised during the campaign. Frankly, this entire episode might have been avoided had there been more communication with all of the parties involved including the local media. I look forward to the day when there is more trust among the administration and the people who are charged with informing the residents of Alexandria on the use of their tax money.

Now on to the race for Louisiana governor. Could Governor Blanco run after all? I just can't help but think of the possibility. KALB-TV is in the process of setting up a gubernatorial debate and now I am inspired after watching part of last nights MSNBC democratic party debate. Wouldn't it be interesting to see Mr. Jindal and Mrs. Blanco go at it. Hillary vs. Obama Louisiana style?

Kalb.com reporter Joel Massey attended today's buget hearing and files this report.

"It was delayed 2 days but the Alexandria city council voted this morning to approve the next year's budget after removing an assistant security position for the new mayor.

Jacques Roy will not lose any of the 5 assistants he's already hired. Those positions are economic development, chief of operations, public relations, publicist, and workforce development. A personnel liaison position has not been filled yet but remains in the budget. The mayor defended the importance of the new assistants and the process used to determine why they were needed. Also scrapped - a proposal to increase sanitation fees by 4 dollars.

Today was the last day the new budget could be approved; otherwise the current budget would have been extended without planned raises for classified city employees. "

Who won the Mayor or the City Council? Does it really matter?

It's 8am Thursday and according to our records the City Council of Alexandria is meeting with Mayor Jacques Roy to comb over the 2007-2008 budget. If the council can not find middle ground with the mayor none of the budget changes the administration is proposing will go into effect, as the deadline is Friday.

During Tuesday's finance committee meeting council members expressed concerns over some of the additional positions on the mayoral payroll. Mayor Roy countered the concern with various statements about having discussed the appointments with several city council members before hand. He also says he delivered letters to the council detailing the additions. To be clear the mayor has the right to appoint positions which serve at his leisure, but the issue of how they are paid falls within the city councils jurisdiction.

And there is the rub. If the council is micro managing the administration can they really expect change and progress? On the flip side, if financial concerns have city council members looking for ways to communication fiscal responsibility to the City of Alexandria residents should they allow the mayor a blank check regarding staffing?

I reached out to Emily Metzgar recently when our governor's staff asked for 3 minutes of live airtime during a 6pm newscast without any decent explanation. I found Emily's name among the state bloggers and emailed her asking if she had any information on what the governor would talk about. She kindly returned the email promptly and simply said...no idea. Of course later we learned what the "non-political" announcement was, Blanco would not run.

Since then I have checked in with Ms. Metzgar's blog and subscribe to her newsletter and find it to be informative and well written. In this article she discusses a study she is doing and says

"the way I'm planning to go about this is to look at agenda-setting measures--that's the idea that blogs can set the stage for what's discussed in the media and among decision makers and among the public. In political communication and mass communication that's called "agenda-setting theory."

Mudslinging Bloggers Take Over?

The Daily Advertiser has a commentary which reads "Internet is ideal for mudslinging"... ya think?
"The fact that laws against libel and slander are not applicable in cyberspace is disquieting, to say the least." laments the commentary.

A similar concern was echoed to me Monday from a central Louisiana politician clearly taken off balance by the huge amount of negative information posted on local blogs about him. This person is determined to find out who is on the attack, and claims to already have an attorney looking into who is posting and organizing this smear campaign.

But the hard truth of the matter is the web will play an even bigger part in political circles than ever before and if you are serving , running for or even considering public office you better learn the web and it's players. We were surprised to find a "soft" announcement from Royal Alexander in this article where he states...
"Poor planning and poor administration by the attorney general's office are the hallmarks of the Foti regime, not to mention the politics-based decision-making process that seems to turn up at every corner," Alexander said in a written statement that launched his campaign. "We can't afford another four years of 'Keystone Cops' style leadership."

Does this mean Alexander has gotten the backing of key republicans? What say you?

Poynter Online is where those of us willing to listen and learn from journalists who seek excellence each day gather. The non-profit organization met Thursday to review what has become a huge issue in our industry...ethics. Judging from the comment section in my last post it is clear, we better learn to listen to the public disappointment with our decisions or face a complete meltdown in trust.
Here is part of the statement from NBC News president Steve Capus of NBC sent to Poynter as they gathered to discuss the ethics of releasing the multimedia manifesto from the VT shooter :

"I want to take a moment to explain our decision. I assure you it was not taken lightly. It was only done after careful consideration and with great sensitivity to the families and friends of the victims and the entire community of Virginia Tech."

I briefly met Capus at an NBC meeting last year and found him to be a humble and kind man for having been identified as one of the most powerful men in the media. I believe him...now the question is do you? And what effect will your disgust over how this situation was handled effect your feelings about KALB? Comment moderation is off...go to town.

The headline reads:
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Restaurant patrons cringed and mothers turned their children away from the television as the video came up of an armed Cho Seung-Hui delivering a snarling, venomous tirade about rich "brats" and their "hedonistic needs."

The way the Virginia Tech story has played out on national television could have implications for longer than the images of the slain will be remembered. Positive and negative effects like anything will be felt.

On a positive note, perhaps the fact that the students there are demanding a better way to be informed during an emergency will prompt others throughout the country to take steps to form better plans. I know we have here.

But the negative result is what shakes me up. How many other sullen, mind twisted people are out there with delusional thoughts ready to jump now that the media has shown every last bit of the VT killers confessions? At what point do we cross the line and over saturate the coverage with his venom thus giving him exactly what he wanted in life and now has achieved in death?
Just asking.

As some of you may know KALB.com debuted a new service called TextCaster Tuesday night. It is a free text message system which alerts subscribers to breaking news and weather. I have been a subscriber of the service since October from a TV station in Charleston and consequently have been the first to know about weather, road closures and breaking news. Before debuting the service here I wanted to see how it can be used. Then the massacre in Virgina Tech happened and it was clear KALB.com needed to jump in and do this too. We are committed to developing technology that can help central Louisiana residents and have this potential warning system no matter how basic.

It was bound to happen. If you read the discussion on international websites over the Virginia Tech shootings you see what they say, Americans are gun crazy fiends running around ready to pop off.
Presidential candidate John McCain says "We have to look at what happened here, but it doesn't change my views on the Second Amendment, except to make sure that these kinds of weapons don't fall into the hands of bad people."

But who knows if a person is "bad?" Gun control, here it comes?

Before the Virginia Tech shooting post a discussion was getting notice on the issue of cyber-bullies. If you have not looked at the comments they may be worth your time.

One local attorney says the following "Several local lawyers have met and discussed these issues, as well as with an LSU law professor. As blogs are a relatively new technology, legal procedure have not yet caught up with it.Recognizing that blog have a great potential for misuse, several national suggestions for a code of blog ethics have been suggested. Basically, these have been modified from codes for journalists."

I bet that does not sit well with some of you since I have heard about a "lack of code of ethics" for local journalists. The issue does have local relevance since one blog in particular seems to spin out of control with defamatory remarks.
Could local cyber-bullies someday land in court?

On another note, a former central Louisiana reporter Josh Green is doing excellent work reporting on the Virginia Tech situation. Journalists like him are the future of the media, both savy and sensitive. He is someone to be proud of and we wish him well, that is not an easy assignment by any means.

There are so many questions right now and few answers to the mystery of how at least 30 people could have been killed in a mass shooting on the Virginia Tech campus.

The CNN i-report video detailing the shots fired from Jamal Albarghouti a student from Virginia Tech will certainly become the focus of how the Internet can help bring perspective to a live breaking current event by allowing eye witnesses to contribute to content.

With that said, this is certainly the time to keep the families effected by this terrible shooting in our hearts and take a moment to pray for their recovery.

I have shared with many of you in person my interested in breaking open the dialog between the web public and the local media. This blog began that way and in only one week I was forced to filter the remarks made. They were not particularly terrible, still, it became clear the blog needed to be moderated to stay on point.
The blogosphere is the new frontier allowing anyone with the desire to become a news seeker and/or maker. But in a recent article in the Los Angeles Times which a family member sent to me, it is clear "cyber-bullies" as The Times call them could have had a negative effect on the blogosphere.
The target was Kathy Sierra a software expert who cancelled her keynote speech at a technology conference in San Diego afraid to leave her home in Boulder, Colorado. Susan Armand of Alexandria wants to hear from you if you have been the victim of theft. She wants you to email her at stoptheftcenla@aol.com. Ms. Armand says she will compile a list and then publish a newsletter so "we can compare notes to see if anything is being done about the crime in our community."

This sounds like one person could make a difference. Imagine if the people who are the victims of crime start organizing the information and finding the items taken in local pawn shops? Could it become the peoples "crimestoppers." Does anyone see problems with the idea?

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti has decided against issuing a ruling on whether former U.S. Sen. John Breaux can run for governor.Two state lawmakers asked Foti to weigh in on whether Breaux, a resident of Maryland, can legally run. Foti issued a statement Friday saying the issue should be decided in the courts."I must refrain from rendering an opinion on the ultimate issue of whether Mr. Breaux meets the qualifications to become a candidate in the governor's race," Foti said.

The blogs went nuts with the thought of a decision today on Senator Breaux. A quick call to the Attorney Generals office confirms a decision is expected, Friday.
The AG's office says the decision will be doled out via news release, we expect, to assure everyone has a crack at it at once.
So what will it be? Can he run through the eyes of the AG's office or not? Does it matter? Does the Jindal 5 mil raised change the equation? Thoughts?

One dead, two injured - 2 construction accidents...

First today two men were taken to Rapides Regional following a construction site accident south of Woodworth this morning.

RPSO says the men were part of a crew working on the widening of Highway 165 at Fish Hatchery Road. The men were apparently working in a hole when it collapsed. A Diamond B Construction spokesperson says the men were subcontractors.

This accident comes one week after another construction accident. That accident on Highway 28 east took the life of 20 year old Mack Doyle of Pineville.

In that accident Pineville Police say the worker was in some type of ditch when it apparently collapsed. Doyle was taken to Rapides Regional and later died.

Breaux said his first option is to receive Attorney General Foti’s opinion which he believes could come out later this week. Breaux said that he would be “guided” by the attorney general’s opinion. “If it is a strong ‘no’ then the decision would be easier. If it is in the middle, then, I would, with advice of counsel, consider my options. If it is a yes, I would certainly proceed as I plan to be in Louisiana this weekend and will plan to campaign every moment of the day if and when I decide to be a candidate”, said Breaux. From a legal standpoint, Breaux said that he is also looking at a “declaratory judgment procedure” which is a legal mechanism that parties take to have a court decide an issue. The former Senator said that it would be best to get the issue of his candidacy clear as-soon-as-possible since parties would want to know what to do about contributions to the campaign so he could deal with other related matters, timely and efficiently and because the much of the Louisiana public wants to know what to do. However, upon further questioning, Senator Breaux said that he concedes that a Court might prefer to wait upon making a legal declaration until after qualifying occurs.
Breaux has been considered to be a moderate Democratic U.S. Senator who has had a history of being a pivot person to bring parties together.
“Political nastiness is not what Louisiana needs”, said Breaux. “At a time when the state is desperately trying to rebuild itself and bring people back, we do not need political name calling and efforts to try to keep people away”.
Breaux said, “Discussing the issues are one thing. I don’t need at this point in my life the nastiness I am seeing and just hope I can contribute in the best inclusive way possible and let the legal system decide my fate and perhaps the immediate future of Louisiana”.

COA Utility Committee meeting discussion has focused on the Cleco mediation. After a presentation by mayoral staff member Jacqueline Whittle the mayor spoke up about the Cleco mediation and says the 11th hour is here.

He is now back tracking from his initial assessment when he took office that the probability of success in the Cleco mediation was good. Mayor Roy says there is only a 50 - 50 shot that this issue will be resolved and is now looking for substantial progress or the mediation will turn the other way.

Mayor Roy is saying his staff is preparing to start a request for other proposals from utility providers outside of LEPA, SWPA and CLECO. He says "if we can't resolve this we can't continue the relationship."

Snow, Breaux and your utility bill.

Our weekend in central Louisiana took an unexpected turn Saturday night with snow, yes real snow, falling in areas around the state. What made it even more interesting was how residents reached out through the Internet to confirm what they were seeing and were looking to share what they had sitting in their yards. Trent Hughes of KALB made a quick observation about it not accumulating and the residents looking at white yards took exception with that. Now what we really need to do is get our web presence up to par and let those same residents send pictures to post immediately. That would prove the white yard full of snow. It's not too late, if you have pictures send them to Nick or Tom at kalb.com.

Senator Breaux could get a decision at anytime from Attorney General Foti on his status. One democrat told us this puts Foti on the hook one way or the other. The real question is if he succeeds in running for governor what will the voters think? Does anyone else remember some residents looking for an Edwin Edwards type character during the post Katrina/Rita mess? Could Breaux be the answer?

Finally, the City of Alexandria wants you to listen and try to understand the important information presented Tuesday during the council meetings. Much of what was discussed in the media last week centered around residents paying more in Alexandria than other areas for their utilities. That led to charges that some local media were "reckless" with the facts and stirring up the population needlessly. There were clearly errors made, but the population became stirred up when they received the bill in the mail and very little of what the local media does has to do with that initial response. We'll follow the presentations closely this week and look for solutions our city managers are putting forth. Then we all need to hold the council accountable for the way they vote.
Suggestions? Anons are allowed but it would be silly to waste time insulting, focus on questions for us to contemplate and solutions.

I hope it will become a place to voice opinions and suggestions on story ideas for all of you wishing to participate. The jury is still out on that. Comment numbers have dramatically dropped, proving anons want to stay that way and be free to insult along the way. I'm not sure how we're going to balance that one yet.

Here are some promised updates:
Bridgette Brown returned my phone call and is willing to do an interview with her lawyer doing all of the talking because Judge Drell has issued a gag order in the Cleco mediation. We will keep you informed along the way if that interview happens.

Myron Lawson also returned the call and is considering answering written questions via email on his business relationships with several polarizing figures. If you blog you know what we'll ask. Do you have a question to pose to Mr. Lawson?

The current owner of the Bentley is holding all of the cards and is also wheeling and dealing in Baton Rouge with the properties he owns there. Does this give us an idea of where this deal is going?

And finally the issue of City of Alexandria utility rates will be discussed thoroughly, we're told, in Tuesday's council meeting. The administration is frustrated with the negative publicity given this issue and is trying hard to communicate the facts. This is tricky considering no matter how hard they try the rate payer is still facing a big fat bill. Since the Mayor Roy's staff live in Alexandria they certainly know how we feel. Now the focus becomes how can this be avoided in the future. Can COA buy power from someone other than Cleco? Ideas?

Thank you for taking part in what is only the beginning of the conversation. It is obvious who I am from the description on this blog, I need not use my name.

The idea behind the CenalMedia blog is to try and give those who want a voice directly to their local media a chance to communicate story ideas in a safe non-threatening venue. Since it is on the web it is open to all. Some good issues have been raised, but as I figured, within one week the blog became a collection of angry "anon" posters who would not have the courage to say the things they do online to a persons face. That's o.k. That's what this is about. But here is the rub. Beginning immediately "traditional" journalists like myself will be challenging their staff to start blogs that begin to engage the online user. After this brief exercise I see the risk and how "off the point" this venue can become.

I don't see us giving up, but I do think anon posts can no longer be allowed and that the posts should have a moderator.

Your local media has been criticized by local blogs and we talk about it to each other. Some of you have insightful feedback and some of us have enjoyed learning from the valid points made. It is important to listen to all sources when looking for ways to improve your craft. But insults do nothing for the idea behind this and other blogs (although they do give us a laugh or two) and they are counter productive.

Gay Guide and Utility Costs.

I'll start by saying these are the two subjects I have received the most correspondence over in the past month. No not Bridgette or Myron or the Mayor.

According to the AP, New Orleans is issuing a guide to assist tourists who are homosexual. This was a three line item which ran on websites, tv stations and newspapers over the past 2 days. Click on the comment section to see the local reaction which was all negative.

On the issue of utility rates, a person I respect tells me this is THE issue. We are all paying the bills and some are paying more than others. Why? I do not clearly understand why Cleco rate payers in Pineville with a 2,400 square foot home pay more than one in Alexandria. Do you have any insight?

Finally a comment from Spanky which could apply to utility costs..."History shows when public frustration due to lack of justice reaches a crescendo, the palace guard is helpless against mob rule."

A comment on the last post says " I'm sure you do a wonderful job in your mind BUT from the looks of things the whole of media here, whether on your end or another, are stagnant. We're overtaken by wave after wave of stories focusing on "feel-good" events that bear little cause to the overall good of the people. Because of this, any serious discussion is pushed to the wayside."

So if that was the case, why start the communication flowing? If we feel we are doing such a terrific job why ask for input?

Here is a tiny list of ideas generated thus far; the Bentley deal (or no deal as it is) the connection between Ms. Brown, Mr. Lawson and Mr. Sanders and how it relates to Cleco, a check on a duplicate set of books being kept for City of Alexandria employees in regards to benefits and I think a moratorium on anything having to do with covering features in Deville.

Am I missing anything?

Republican Looks to Challenge Foti
Royal Alexander, a former congressional aide, says he is "seriously considering" running against Attorney General Charlie Foti this year.
The 40-year-old Shreveport attorney worked three years for Congressman Rodney Alexander (no relation) (I love how we always have to say that) and managed two campaigns for former Congressman Clyde Holloway.
Alexander would be the first Republican candidate to emerge and he is counting on it staying that way. He hopes to get the support of the state party and financial help from the Committee for a Republican Majority. Without that backing as the sole Republican-endorsed candidate, he said, "I'm not doing it."
He doesn't take a position on whether the attorney general should issue an opinion on John Breaux's eligibility to run for governor or what that opinion should be. "The state constitution is really ambiguous," he said, but that courts "tend to err on the side of allowing candidates to run."
Foti starts with a big financial advantage of $1.07 million in his campaign account.

The Bentley, Mayor Roy and Bridgette...

...not in that order but boy is it a busy post meeting day for Alexandria residents and those who are curious about where the Top Story and Headlines take us.

On the Bentley Hotel and possible city involvement. What do you think? From my limited amount of time sniffing around on the blogs just about everyone is against the city getting in the hotel business. So what are the options for the Great White Elephant in downtown?

Mayor Roy according to one post on this blog is enjoying a "honeymoon" with the local media and the blogger wants to know when it will end. I'm not sure there is one. Credit must be given to Mr. Roy for having a smart team of people working for him. Perhaps they know how to control us?

...and then Ms. Brown. She has become quite a figure in all of the Cleco discussions. Is her involvement really what the rate payers of Alexandria are concerned about?

I was sure the first comment would be negative and it was. What joy!

Let me skip to the comment on how stories are chosen. It is my belief the public thinks the media sit around and deliberate on ways to slant the news one way or the other. This may be true in some cases, but there are exceptions. And many of us simply don't have the time to think of ways to bend the truth.

Many of us in the central Louisiana media collect information from our personal sources, phone calls, faxes, email and visits. The information is usually compiled in some way in a computer with a schedule and then the news manager balances the resources he has with the list of story ideas and scheduled events.

As the day unfolds are there are changes made, depending on what comes in to the newsroom. A prime example is what occurred in Ball with suspected illegal immigrants arrested. The story came in at about 4:00pm and the day kicked up again in the news cycle.

IMHO (in my humble opinion) we all do a fairly good job with the resources we have. And now is a good time in the media for central Louisiana with the explosion (too big a description?) of the internet.

For those of us in the local media willing to listen, we will have more tools than ever to find the kind of news you will be interested in…are you willing to participate?
